CHAPTER 7

This is so unfair,” Bella grumbles into the cauldron she’s scrubbing. “We try to do something nice for Principal Koffin, and this is how she repays us? With more detention?”

Bella and Dee are in their Potions classroom, cleaning cauldrons after school for the second day in a row. Professor Daphne, acting once again as their detention monitor, sleeps soundly at her desk, not to be disturbed, no matter how many times Dee accidentally sends a sudsy cauldron crashing to the floor.

“She wasn’t nice to Vice Principal Archaic, either,” Dee says as she squeezes her sponge over a bucket. “Poor guy. Did you see how sad he looked?”

Bella recalls the crushed expression on Archaic’s face when Principal Koffin refused him—just like Helena when Alistair gave his broom to Serafina on Monday’s episode of Which Witch Is the One? “Yeah. She could’ve at least come up with an excuse, instead of just saying no.” Bella channels her frustration into her sponge by squeezing and scrubbing harder. “And what did she mean by ‘it would be impossible,’ anyway? What’s impossible about lunch?”

“Take a breath, Bella,” Dee warns. “Or else you’ll zap that cauldron to smithereens.”

“I’m just saying.” Bella continues scrubbing. “Operation Love Spell worked perfectly on Vice Principal Archaic. What’s Principal Koffin’s problem? Why is she so against falling in love?”

Red sparks sizzle on Bella’s fingertips, and the cauldron cracks beneath her hands. She groans. Fortunately, Professor Daphne is unfazed, still snoring softly at her desk.

Dee shrugs. “Maybe she’s not against it. Maybe it’s just a little harder for her.” She feels her eyephone buzz in her pocket and blushes, guessing who it might be without having to look.

“What do you mean?” Bella zaps the broken cauldron pieces into a nearby trash can and then crosses her arms. “And why is your face all red?”

Dee puts a hand to her cheek self-consciously. “I mean… we don’t know what she’s been through. Maybe something happened in her past that made her put walls up.” She picks up her sponge and gets to work on a new cauldron. “Maybe she’s had her heart broken. Like Helena.”

The anger falls from Bella’s face as she considers this. “Jeepers creepers, it is just like Helena and Alistair. She still had walls up from her last relationship, so Alistair couldn’t get close to her, and that’s why he sent her home!”

Dee raises an eyebrow. “What’s your point?”

“My point,” Bella says, dropping her sponge, “is that Principal Koffin will never be able to fall in love if she keeps her walls up. We have to help her!”

“Right,” Dee says, her voice flat. She’s resisting the urge to check her eyephone notifications. “I thought that was what we’ve been doing all day today with Operation Love Spell.”

“But there’s one thing we still haven’t tried.” Bella’s eyes brighten. “A love spell!”

Now Dee drops her sponge too. “No. Or are you trying to turn our detention into an expulsion?”

“But why not?” Bella presses. “We’ve got everything we could possibly need to cast the spell right here.
